Over-the-range microwaves are a popular addition to many kitchens, thanks in part to their substantial capacities and conservation of counter space. Depending on how much room you have available, you might choose an over-the-range microwave in one of several sizes. It's important to measure the space you plan to fill and consider your microwave oven needs before you purchase a new appliance.

Most over-the-range microwaves are just under 30 inches wide. This corresponds to the standard width of a range or cooktop as well as the width of the open cabinet space above the cooking surface. Typically, an over-the-range microwave fits into this cabinet space — flanked by a full-size cabinet at each side of the range — and mounts to a short cabinet that spans across the top of this space.

You also need to think about the overall height and depth of the microwave to make sure it fits your space and has enough clearance above the range surface. Another factor is microwave capacity — the interior space used for cooking. The table below shows typical capacities and dimensions of over-the-range microwaves based on a study of popular models available from major manufacturers.

Which Over-the-Range Microwave Size Is Best?

Microwave dimensions may be confusing since there are two sets for each unit: interior and exterior dimensions. When it comes to over-the-range units, the exterior dimensions are particularly important. Keep in mind that microwave depth will determine how far the appliance sticks out from the wall. If you are very tall, a microwave with too great a depth might hinder your ability to easily access your range. If you are shorter, you could hit your head on the bottom of the microwave while leaning over to access the back of the range.

Over-the-Range Microwave Installation Height

Some local building codes have specific requirements for where you can install an over-the-range microwave, but in most cases, it's best to refer to the manufacturer's installation specifications. These are the standard installation recommendations for an over-the-range microwave:

  • 66 inches from the floor to the top of the microwave
  • 30 inches from the top of the range/cooktop surface to the top of the microwave

This installation height places the interior of the microwave at a safe and convenient location for average-height adults. Taller or shorter users may want to modify the height accordingly. The most important thing to follow is the minimum height requirement for clearance above the stovetop, and this may be dictated by the local building code; contact your city's code authority for recommendations.
