Skid steer loaders like Caterpillar's 262B are compact, four-wheel-drive, hydraulic material handlers that can be fitted with a variety of attachments and implements such as pallet forks, bucket loader, plowing blade or backhoe. They are valued for their adaptability to a range of applications. The wheels on each side of a skid steer are driven independently of the other side, enabling zero-radius turning for work in extremely tight spaces. Instead of a steering wheel, the operator steers the skid steer with a pair of joysticks that control wheel speed and rotation direction on each side. Skid steers are rated according to operating capacity weight and horsepower. At over 2,200 pounds operating capacity weight and 70 horsepower, the Caterpillar 262B is classified as a large frame skid steer.
The 262B is powered by a 3.3-liter Caterpillar 3044C DIT diesel engine with direct injection and turbocharging. It develops 82 horsepower and delivers a rated operating capacity weight of 2,700 pounds.
Hydraulic pumps in the Caterpillar 262B are direct drive from the engine crankshaft. No belts are used. At high idle, the pumps provide 22 gallons per minute of hydraulic fluid at 3,335 PSI. Hydraulic power to implements and tools is provided through quick connect couplings on the boom arm. The high-capacity reservoir contains 14 gallons of hydraulic fluid which is cooled by a high efficiency cooler.
Power is transferred to the wheels by two high-strength chains per side. The chains are submerged in an oil bath for continuous lubrication. Maximum forward speed is 7.2 miles per hour. Maximum speed in reverse is 7.2 miles per hour.
The Caterpillar 262B holds 23.8 gallons of fuel and 2.6 gallons of coolant. Engine oil capacity is 2.6 gallons.
Wheelbase of 262B is 48.3 inches. Overall length with bucket loader installed is 142.4 inches. Height to the top of the cab is 81.2 inches, and the total height with booms in full upright position is 159.9 inches. The 262B has a ground clearance of 7.7 inches.
