Macrame Christmas Projects

Macrame is a craft that has existed for centuries. It uses decorative knots to create beautiful, intricate designs, using basic tools and supplies along with macrame cords. Use basic or intricate knots to create beautiful Christmas projects. Decorate your tree, your gifts and your home for the holidays with handmade treasures this holiday season.

Tree Ornaments

  • No two snowflakes are alike, including the ones you macrame using a variety of knots and sparkly white yarn. Make several in different designs and sizes to decorate your tree, wreaths or to add to gift tags. Decorate your tree with Christmas bells in an array of festive colors. Make them flat or dimensional, and hang a small jingle bell from them. String several bell ornaments together, and make a garland to drape across the mantle.

Kissing Ball

  • Hang the mistletoe with a twist at Christmas. Weld together three metal rings to form an open ring ball. Use whatever size rings will accommodate the space where the ball will hang. Work macrame knots around each of the rings, adding a loop at the top to hang the ball, a loop inside the ball to attach the mistletoe, and a long fringe hanging at the bottom. Hang a cluster of fresh or artificial mistletoe on the inside loop. Hang your kissing ball in a doorway, and start collecting holiday kisses. Add beads or bells to the fringe, if desired.

Santa Towel Ring

  • Decorate your bathroom or kitchen with a festive Santa Claus towel ring. Using simple macrame stitches, make a simple pink face and a red and white hat. Add felt or button eyes and a pompom nose, top his hat off with a pompom of the white macrame cord and make him a beard and mustache that is one large fringe of the same. Attach Santa to a simple ring covered in a colored macrame cord, and drape a small holiday towel over the ring. Make a snowman towel ring as well, for a different room.

Tree and Wall Decor

  • Make decorative wall displays to hang over a mantle, on your front door or from a stair railing. Instead of a wreath, hang a decorated macrame tree on the front door to greet visitors. Use a variety of creative stitches to create the decorations, or use a single stitch and decorate with buttons, artificial berries, beads or sparkly metallic stars. A string of battery-operated twinkle lights poking through the stitches would add to the festive atmosphere. Create macrame candy canes to decorate a staircas, or stars to top trees or add to wreaths.
