Unconventional Ways to Ace the Job Interview

Think outside the box to stand out from other job candidates in an interview. How you prepare yourself before the interview and conduct yourself after will play an important role in determining whether you are called for another interview or given the job. Your unconventional, but professional, techniques will make employers remember you when it is time to make a hiring decision.

  1. Bring Electronic Documents

    • Buy a cheap flash drive, and upload an electronic version of your resume, a video resume, and video recommendations from former employers including contact information. Attach an index card with the contents of the flash drive to the drive, and give it to the interviewer. He will likely be impressed with your creativity and preparedness. Instead of just bringing a copy of your resume, you provided it and more in a user-friendly format.

    Blog

    • Start a blog about a topic related to the position for which you are applying. Mention your blog in your resume. This is another way to demonstrate your ability and knowledge to an employer. It also shows you are willing to expend effort to share knowledge and skills with others and to learn from them without having to be paid for it. This lends more credence to your passion and enthusiasm for your line of work.

    Website

    • Reference your professional website in your resume. Your website should contain your resume, projects you have worked on related to your field and other information that tells an employer more about your background, education and experience. Post photos of volunteer work in which you have participated related to the job you are applying for, videos and PowerPoints of information related to your field the public can read and learn from. Include references and testimonials from people you have worked with as well.

    Thank You Letter

    • Send a thank you letter to your interviewer by regular mail or email within 24 hours after the interview. If your communication has been mainly by email with the employer or if you know the employer will soon be traveling or making a hiring decision immediately, it is acceptable to send a thank you letter only by email. However, you will stand out from other candidates if you go the extra step and type a short letter thanking the employer for the chance to interview and reiterating your interest in and qualifications for the job.
