Tips on Growing Hair When Sleeping thumbnail
No need to pull your hair out trying to get it to grow; sleep on it.

Most everyone wants a luxurious head of shining hair. With fast-paced life styles leaving no time to properly care for your hair, improper nutrition and a variety of environmental factors, it is surprising that many of us have any hair at all. There are a number of ways to combat the stress put on your hair, and much of it can be done while you sleep. Getting a good night's sleep is not only good for your well being, but it also gives skin cells and the scalp time to renew and refresh. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Baby Your Hair and Scalp

    • Treat your hair like a fine piece of silk. Invest in the best brush you can afford, preferably one with natural bristles, and brush gently before bed. Massage your scalp gently with your fingertips every night to stimulate the scalp and hair follicles. Either loosely braid your hair, if it is long enough, or wear a stocking cap to sleep. If you must wear your hair loose at night, invest in a silk or similar material pillow case to avoid your hair snagging or breaking while you sleep.

    Treatments to Sleep In

    • Many salons, drug stores and beauty supply stores sell products that promote hair growth. While none of them add inches to your hair overnight, they provide the extra nutrients and vitamins your hair may lack. Look for products with B-6, biotin, protein and folic acid. Products containing jojoba, almond, sesame, olive or coconut oil are beneficial oils for your hair. Treat your locks to a overnight hot oil treatment at least once a week. Wrap hair in a stocking cap or a cap specificity made for hot oil treatments.

    Hair Products to Avoid

    • Many hair products are made with mineral oil or petroleum because they are inexpensive. They are actually bad for your hair because they clog the hair follicle blocking the nutrients and beneficial oils from entering cuticle. Alcohol is found in many hair products and, depending on the kind, can be very drying for the hair. Dimethicone, another popular ingredient, is a form of silicone which creates the illusion of softness in your hair but, in the long run, dries it out because it is, after all, a chemical. The worst ones of all are polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol, as they are used as thickening agents. Propylene can quickly penetrate the skin or hair shaft. Polyethylene is one of the chemicals used in oven cleaner and antifreeze. Avoid putting these products in your hair, especially overnight.

Healing Hair From the Inside Out

    • Just like the rest of our body, a diet of junk food and nutrient-poor food effects your hair as well. A well-balanced diet of healthy proteins, vitamins and minerals not only keeps our bodies healthy, but also promotes healthy hair growth. Leafy green vegetables, colorful fruits, omega-3-rich fish and a good vitamin supplement full of B6, biotin and folic acid goes a long way in helping your locks grow while you get your beauty rest.
