Comcast's high-speed-compatible cable modems have specific hardware and software requirements.

Comcast's high-speed Internet service allows you to enjoy TV, Internet and voice services under one system. This includes On Demand satellite TV and HD video quality. However, there are hardware and software specifications you must meet to use Comcast-compatible cable modems. These requirements vary depending on the Internet speed you choose. Available connection speeds include 20 Mbps, 30 Mbps, 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps.

  1. Processor Speed Requirements

    • The processing speed required to run a Comcast cable modem on your computer will vary depending on your desired speed connection and your operating system. However, a processor of 1 GHz if you have Windows 7, 500 MHz or higher if you have Windows XP and 1.5 GHz if you have Vista is sufficient for most connection speeds. On the low speed end of the spectrum, 20 Mbps, you will need only a 300 MHz processor if you have the more efficient Windows XP platform.

    RAM Requirements

    • RAM requirements also vary depending on your operating system and modem speed connection. A midrange specification for 30 Mbps is 1 GB for Windows 7, 512 MB for Vista and 256 MB for Windows XP. However, fast connections such as 100 Mbps require 2 GB of RAM and is only available for Windows 7.

    Hard Disk

    • Hard-disk requirements range from 150 MB for Windows XP and Windows Vista for 20 Mbps, 30 Mbps and 50 Mbps connections to 3 GB for a computer running on Windows 7 and with a modem connection of 100 Mbps. Notice these are minimum requirements. You will need much more hard-disk space to download programs, music and pictures once you start using your modem.

    Other Specifications

    • You will also need to ensure that your Internet browser and Ethernet connection are compatible with Comcast's cable-modem requirements for the speed you choose. Currently, a Fast Ethernet of 10/100 is required. With reference to browsers, Comcast supports Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox. It is good practice to update your browser of choice every time a new version is launched.
