Which Walls Do I Accent in a Bedroom?

The side wall in a modern bedroom can be accented with artwork or lamps.

A room's accent wall often draws attention to the most prominent section of the room, and serves to bring all the decorative colors in the room together. Your bedroom can sometimes feature smaller walls leading to the closet or bathroom, and you can accent any of these spaces to give your room one-of-a-kind style that is visually impressive. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Side Walls

    • If you don't want to showcase wall hangings or artwork on the front or back walls of the room, the left and right wall spaces are ideal for medium-sized portraits or standing lamps and synthetic house plants. Accenting the bedroom's side wall is also appropriate if this is the first wall you see when you walk into the room. For example, paint blue and brown stripes on the side wall when the rest of the walls are painted a cocoa shade. In the tradition of understated modern decorating, if the side walls are slightly shorter than the back and front walls, it's best to add color such as a wide center stripe or black-and-white portrait in a colored frame for a sophisticated eye-catching feature that doesn't overwhelm the space.

    Walls Supporting Furniture

    • Make the wall your bed is against the accent wall by adding an ornate headboard to give more texture and color to the bedroom space. For instance, if most of your bedroom decor is off-white or gray, but you have lime green and sea blue throw pillows on the bed, choose a headboard covered in fabric with these two shades and accented with silver studs to become the room's focal piece. Or, if there are armchairs or a chaise in the room, paint the side or back wall of the bedroom that supports the furniture in stripes that feature the furniture's color and a contrasting hue.

    Small Walls

    • A small wall in the bedroom is just the right place for adding a pop of vivid color in the bedroom without overpowering the area. For instance, if you're using jewel tones in the bedroom but the rest of the bedroom furniture such as the bed and nightstands are in metallic shades such as gold or bronze, a small wall near the closet or bathroom painted a shade of ruby red or emerald green adds elegant color. Or, if you've adorned the majority of the bedroom in black and white, choose the smallest or shortest wall in the room to paint a shade of cherry red or Kelly green. Add a large black-and-white throw pillow to the area to bring the color scheme together.

    Walls with Windows

    • Accent the walls in your bedroom with windows by combining several colors and textures in one area, and adorning the rest of the bedroom in neutral tones. If the bed, linens and desk are light gray or off-white, choose medium blue curtains trimmed in silver for the windows, and paint a group of thin stripes on the wall near the window in four or five shades of blue such as periwinkle, blueberry, and turquoise. For a bedroom where warm neutrals such as brown and cream are the main feature, adorn the window with cranberry red or lemon yellow curtains in a thin material that easily lets the sun in, and paint the wall paneling in the same shade as the curtains.
