Savannah, Georgia, is a picturesque city at the mouth of the Savannah River. There are many public gardens and historical sites that can accommodate small or large weddings.
Sticking to a budget and saving money on various costs can be important when planning a wedding. One of the places to curtail costs is in the location of the wedding; however, spending a modest amount of money doesn't mean it can't be impressive. Savannah has many affordable venue options.
Savannah has several dozen parks, squares and gardens that can have spaces reserved for weddings. Because the spaces are owned by the city, the fees are not too expensive for weddings or receptions. A three-hour time block costs $225 in 2011; add $50 for each hour after that.
The most famous square in Savannah is Forsyth Park; park reservations cost the same as other parks, unless you want to hold your wedding at the band shell. Add $500 to the park price for the band shell. Maintenance fees are also charged; under 50 people costs $50, up to 100 is $125 and up to 150 people is $200. Above 150 people, there are additional per-person fees.
Coastal Heritage Society
The Coastal Heritage Society has several places of historical significance around Savannah where you can hold your wedding. The Savannah History Museum charges $600 for a three-hour time block for the ceremony. You can also hold your reception on site; costs vary based on the foods or drinks offered.
The Roundhouse Railroad Museum is an outdoor site with working trains and an old blacksmith shop. They charge $700 per hour for holding the ceremony; they also offer catering for a reception.
There are 15 historic churches in Savannah, including Baptist, Catholic, Episcopal, AME, Unitarian and Wesley denominations. Check with the church you prefer to see if they hold weddings for non-members as well as members. The fee is often small for church weddings, even in historic buildings. Some churches also have halls that may be available for receptions.
Davenport House Museum Venues
The Davenport House Museum has both a garden and a restored pharmacy available for weddings. The courtyard garden is in the middle of historic Savannah; you can rent it for just the ceremony, or include the reception, as well. The cost is $700 for just the ceremony and $1,200 for both.
The Kennedy Pharmacy is a restored building originally built in 1890; with 900 square feet of space, there is plenty of room for a wedding and reception. Rent the building for the entire day, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for only $500. For an evening wedding after 5 p.m., the cost goes up to $600.
