Gov't Grants for Authors
If you are a writer, you may be able to get grant money to help you research your subject. There are several government grants out there for good writers who are willing to write on a few special topics. Usually, you have to be a published writer to qualify for most of these grants. You may be able to get a grant if you are able to show that you have a very good story to tell. In either case, it is not easy to qualify for a government grant for writers.

-
The National Endowment for Arts awards two literature fellowships. The Creative Writing Fellowship is for creative writers to help them set aside time for research, travel and writing. For the year 2012, fellowships of $25,000 will be awarded for both prose and poetry to published writers. The fellowship for translation projects awards $12,500 to $25,000 to writers who intend to carry out translations of specific works of poetry, prose or drama from other languages to English.

State Grants
-
In addition to federal grants, you may also be eligible for several state-sponsored grants for writers. Mississippi awards an Artist Mini-Grants Program stipend of up to $500 to help writers travel, research and attend conferences. Several states, including Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and Texas have emergency relief funds to help artists in the event of an unforeseen health or property disaster. The Montana Opportunity Grants program awards up to $1,000 and is available for artists throughout the year.
Other Grants
-
Since there are very few government-sponsored grants for writers, you may also consider applying for one of the many private grants available to writers. There are a number of special interest groups awarding grants to authors willing to write on a specific subject. Also, many organizations provide emergency funds to writers in distress. You may also explore overseas opportunities, since countries like United Kingdom and Canada also award several grants for writers.
