Checklist of Kitchen Necessities

It is important to stock your kitchen with the essentials, but determining what those essentials are can be difficult. Have a checklist of kitchen necessities so you'll know what to buy.

  • Essential utensils in any kitchen include plates, bowls, forks, spoons, knives and drinking glasses. Some of the utensils you should have are a good cutting knife, spatula, wooden spoons, peeler and metal tongs are all you need to get started. As you find needs for utensils, you can purchase them one at a time until you have everything you need.

Pots and Pans, Etc.

  • Every kitchen should have one or two plastic mixing bowls for cooking and food storage in the refrigerator. The reusable plastic food storage containers with lids can be used as mixing bowls, storage containers and food serving containers out of the microwave. A cutting board is a good idea to have a clean place to cut up food. A set of cooking pots and at least one frying pan is necessary, along with a strainer to separate liquids from solids.

  • Microwaves are inexpensive and convenient. Other inexpensive but convenient kitchen appliances are toasters, electric can openers and a coffee maker. If you do not have a stove in your kitchen, then you can use a hotplate for surface cooking and the microwave for oven cooking. If you have the resources, a small convection oven would be an ideal replacement for the standard oven.

Storage and Counter Space

  • A portable kitchen island can be used as extra cabinet and counter space, and is essential in any kitchen. You will need a refrigerator and freezer to store food safely. You can get smaller refrigerators for a lower price, but keep in mind that the freezers in smaller refrigerators do not hold much and can be a challenge when it comes to temperature control. You can cut corners on most any other kitchen necessities, but you should consider putting resources into getting a good refrigerator.

  • A kitchen necessity that can go forgotten is the kitchen dish drainer for allowing clean dishes to dry. Keeping your kitchen as clean as possible is essential for preventing disease. A dish drainer will allow you to safely wash and dry your dishes. Other miscellaneous kitchen essentials include a dishcloth, dish soap, scrubbing pads for removing baked-on food from plates and pans and drinking glasses.
