Retro '60s Hairstyles

Sleek updos are a retro '60s hairstyle.

While many people consider the '60s to be a time of experimentation, this decade also marked a time when glamorous, independent women came into their own. This translated to hair that was coiffed and styled, no matter what the length. In contrast to the '50s, which favored short hair, all lengths of hair were acceptable. Many of the retro '60s hairstyles are again in vogue. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Long and Straight

    • Long, straight hair was commonly worn by young people in the '60s. This was not straggly or unkempt hair that we saw in the '70s. The hair was swingy and healthy with a blunt cut at the ends, and was often accompanied by heavy bangs. A common style for those with long, straight hair was to pull the sides and top back and secure at the crown with a clip.

    Bouffant

    • Bouffants are a quintessential retro '60s hairstyle. Created on medium length to long hair, they featured massive curls, teased and piled onto the head. The goal was to get it as big as possible. To get the large curls, women often used jumbo rollers. To create height on the bouffant, they teased and teased and then sprayed it with hairspray.

    Chignon

    • A sleek, feminine chignon was a perfect formal '60s hairstyle. This version of the chignon had style. The hair was sleek toward the front and twisted into a figure eight shape in the back. It was common for soft tendrils of hair to frame the face. To hold the chignon in place, decorative combs or chips were used.

    Bob

    • Bob hairstyles are classic. There are a variety of types, from the classic bob to the trendier graduated bob. The popular way to wear a bob in the '60s was wavy and short. A popular bob hairstyle in that decade was cut to chin length. Using large rollers, women curled their hair off their faces and the top swooped over to one side. The waves surrounded the face as well.
