Cupcake Tree Ideas for a Baroque Party
The Baroque period in history began in the 1600s and continued until around 1750, with a brief revival in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Roman Catholic Church heavily influenced the era's style, feeling that art should reflect religious themes. Additionally, those of wealth and position used the flamboyant expressions of the times for decorating homes and gardens. By looking at various aspects of the Baroque era, you can come up with ways in which to creatively present cupcakes for a theme party. Does this Spark an idea?

Architecture
-
Architecture of this period had curving, bold lines ornately decorated. Marble and bronze predominate rooftops, which is one potential way to express your theme throughout the cupcake tree by using frosting. Apply the frosting so that it takes the shape of a dome. For layers that build up the top, you can add shaped marzipan or fondant. Paint the edges and tops of the cupcakes using gold leaf. The cupcake display stand could include scroll work, flowers, wings, leaves and ovals. If you can find a mirrored oval serving tier, all the better.
Music
-
Musical expressions grew during the Baroque period. Some of the favorite instruments included the organ, violin, flute and trumpets. Any one of these instruments could help you in decorating tiers of your cupcake ensemble. For example, decorate the bottom layer of cupcakes with black and white frosting and stagger the layout to look like organ keys. On the next layer make fondant miniature flutes by rolling small tubes and adding holes. Lay out your display on gold wrapping paper or white linen for an elegant flair.

Hair
-
Ringlets were common in hairstyles of the Baroque era, with people generally preferring curly hair. Men wore goatees and mustaches. So for this tree display, decorate the top of your cupcakes using piped "ringlets," as if the cake were a person's head. Use various colors of icing that look somewhat like natural hair colors. Some of the other cupcakes can have "mustaches." Around the plates, use curtain sashes decoratively tucked to make a formal-looking edging. Alternatively, ribbons would also be quite apt. In the middle of each cupcake, place a decorative hair pin that acts as a party favor.
Fashion
-
If there were one word that sums up fashion of the Baroque era, it's opulent. Rich colors--dark green, royal purple, ruby red and gold--dominated the fashion scene. On top of fabrics like velvet and satin, you'd find bead work, lace and embroidery, while people wore buckled shoes. Several of these styles provide ideas for tier cupcake decorating. Top your cupcakes with bright hues onto which you pipe pearls of frosting. Put the cupcakes on a foundation of lacy doilies that hang over the side of each tier. Include velvet bows or fondant buckles to round out the visual impact.
