Specifications of the Intel GMA 950

The Intel GMA 950 is an entry of the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator, which is the current brand of integrated graphics processing unit that its manufacturer -- semiconductor company Intel -- builds into motherboard chipsets. Released in 2005, it wasn't a very well received GPU, as many reviewers deemed it incapable of accommodating hardcore personal computer gaming.

  1. Main Specs

    • The Intel GMA 950 has a 256-bit graphics core which runs at a rate of 400 megahertz. Additionally, the GPU supports up to a memory bandwidth of 10.6GBps. At the time Intel debuted the GMA 950, it made it compatible with Microsoft's Windows 2000 and XP operating systems. For its video capabilities, the unit shares up to 192MB of the PC's system memory, which is based on second-generation DDR SDRAM architecture with a 667-MHz access speed.

    Computer Graphics Processing

    • Although the Intel GMA 950 has the Pixel Shader 2.0 program, which is sufficient for 3-D PC games released at the time, such as "Doom 3" and "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory." Another essential program, however, Vertex Shader 2.0, isn't hardware-driven but is calculated in the software by the computer's processor. Thus, some 3-D games might not run optimally with the GMA 950, or at worst they'll be incompatible with the GMA 950. Other 2-D and 3-D computer graphics processing features include support for version 1.4 of the Open Graphics Library application programming interface, texture decompression for DirectX 9 and OpenGL, and a maximum clock rendering of 4 pixels.

    Display Technology

    • The Intel GMA 950 has several display types, which include low-voltage differential signaling, Digital Visual Interface, high-definition television -- with 720p and 1080i modes -- and picture tube. The maximum graphics display resolution it can support is 2,048 by 1,536 pixels at a 75-hertz frequency. Also included are two Serial Digital Video Out ports; and support for Intel Media Expansion cards, dual-screen support and interlaced display output.

    Video Support

    • The Intel GMA 950 is able to speed up the decoding of MPEG-2 content by using its built-in Motion Compensation feature, with simultaneous support of two HD streams. You can't use the GPU to stream digital video adhering to later standards such as MPEG-4 or VC-1. The GMA 950 also offers up-and-down scaling of video content and 5-by-3 overlay filtering.
