Goethe-Institut Grants
The Goethe-Institut was founded in 1951, and is dedicated to promoting educational and cultural programs on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. The institute is particularly involved in projects that promote the study of the German language abroad and encourages cross-cultural exchanges around the world. The Goethe-Institut accredits international schools that teach German, and also operates language schools around the world and coordinates festivals, cultural programs and artistic events.

Translation Grant

The Goethe-Institut provides translation grants to support non-German publishers who wish to translate German books into other languages. The goal of the fund is to foster academic contributions and to support the dissemination of fiction and non-fiction works for adults and children around the world. Proceeds from the grant can be used to finance translation, editorial and printing costs. The Goethe Institute's translation program has been in effect for 35 years. Approximately 5,000 books have been translated into 45 different languages.

Artists who reside in Germany are eligible to apply to the Goethe-Institut's travel grant program, which has been offered since 2008. Eligible candidates must reside and work in Germany. Their project should focus in the field of contemporary international art. The goal of the program is to establish strong links between Germany and international artists, and to assist German curators broaden their knowledge of international contemporary art. The institute promotes exhibitions that deal with international contemporary art. Applicants must submit a detailed application describing their project. The grant covers the partial cost of an artist's research and travel expenses.

The Goethe-Institut offers year-round, four-to-eight week German courses for scholars holding a Ph.D. or equivalent. Applicants must be working full time in research or teaching positions in the U.S. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Preference is given to candidates working in the social sciences, natural sciences and engineering. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of German and demonstrate their need for improving their proficiency in the language. Eligible candidates receive 1,700 Euros for a four-week course.

Applicants for the Goethe-Institut grants should review the eligibility requirements and deadlines for each grant category as the requirements vary. Incomplete applications will not be considered for review. The institute provides up to 1,500 Euros for translation grants. The grants are primarily offered to literary translators; only non-German translators are eligible to apply for translation grants. In addition to their application, translators must submit valid license agreement and a translator's contract. The institute also offers scholarships for drama and dance projects.
