Plants That Repel Mosquitoes Indoors

Mosquitoes are blood-sucking insects that not only invade the yard, but indoors as well. While many homeowners use commercial repellents to keep mosquitoes away, others seek alternative methods that don't require harmful chemicals. One such method is placing particular mosquito-repelling plants near doors and windows, which are the common entry points of mosquitoes.

  • Catnip is a flowering plant that appeals to cats. However, it is hated by mosquitoes and other insects such as ants, roaches, fleas and beetles, making it is a good insect repellent. Catnip is a perennial plant that grows about 5 feet tall and produces small white or lilac flowers. It is an aromatic herb from the mint family and can be grown indoors. Catnip oil is a major ingredient in many insect repellent sprays.

  • Rosemary is known for its rich aroma and is added to a wide range of cuisines. However, the aroma is hated by mosquitoes. The rosemary oil extracted from this herb serves as an excellent mosquito repellent. This herb grows well in dry climates. It can be grown in pots inside the home. It can grow up to 6 feet tall and is sensitive to cold.

Citronella Grass

  • Another natural mosquito repellent is citronella grass, which is a tropical plant that grows up to 6 feet tall. The oil extracted from this plant is used in sprays and candles that repel mosquitoes as well as in food flavoring and cosmetics. Place the plant in your home and groom it regularly.

  • Marigold grows up to 12 inches tall and produces attractive orange, red or yellow flowers. Apart from its beauty, it is known for repelling mosquitoes and other insects in the home. These annuals can grow in any soil and must be placed in areas of the home with direct sunlight.
