What Are Steeler Colors?

Pittsburgh is the only city in the United States where all three professional sports teams have the same colors: black and gold. Since the 1800s, these colors have represented the city itself, and the city's flag uses the colors as well. Both the Steelers' name and colors pay homage to the heavy industry that built the city's character and reputation.

Black and Gold

  • Since the team was first established in 1933, the Steelers have worn uniforms of black and gold. The colors derive from Sir William Pitt's family coat of arms. The city of Pittsburgh bears his name and those original Steelers also wore that coat of arms on their jerseys. For one season, however, Steelers wore the green and white of the Philadelphia Eagles. In 1943, World War II left NFL teams struggling to fill their rosters, and the Steelers and Eagles united as the "Steagles" for one season.
