The Toughbook CF-28, also known as the Toughbook 28, was a durable laptop manufactured by the Panasonic Corporation. Its rugged design was made to perform in some of the most extreme outdoor conditions, and it could resist everything from moisture and dust to strong vibrations. It was one version of a long line of Toughbook laptops that were used in both the field as well as the office.
The Toughbook CF-28 was built and tested to military standards and includes a wide array of durability features such as a full magnesium-alloy case with sealed port and connector covers, as well as a moisture and dust-resistant LCD display, keyboard and touchpad. Its drop-shock resistant design also consists of rugged hinges and a shock-mounted, removable hard disk drive protected within a stainless steel case.
Software and Memory
The Toughbook CF-28 operates on a Microsoft Windows XP or 2000 platform using a low-voltage, Mobile Intel Pentium III M-Processor in either 1GHz or 800MHz. It includes a 30GB hard drive and 256MB of SDRAM memory that can be expanded up to 512MB. The 1.44MB floppy disk drive holds 3.5-inch floppy disks and also accepts the optional DVD-ROM/CD-RW combination drive.
The Toughbook CF-28 includes an 11.1-volt lithium-ion battery pack with up to four hours of operation time. With the optional second battery that fits in the multibay drive (where the CD-ROM is housed), battery performance can be extended to 10 hours. Battery charging time is approximately three hours when the device is powered off and 5.5 hours when in operation. It also includes on-screen battery status reporting and easy battery replacement. For other power options, it comes with a 100-to-240-volt AC power adapter.
The Toughbook CF-28 has a width of 11.8 inches, a depth of 9.5 inches and height of only 2.3 inches when closed. Its overall weight is 9 lbs., which includes the lithium-ion battery pack, floppy disk drive and hand strap. It is available in two different displays: a 13.3-inch, anti-reflective Active Matrix color LCD screen (with or without touchscreen capability) with 1021-by-768 pixels, or a 12.1-inch, Active Matrix color LCD with touchscreen capability in 800-by-600 pixels.
