Implementing the right management strategy can help a department or a company to reach new goals. Effective management must adapt to different situations and utilize the available resources to achieve goals. Consultative management in organizational behavior seeks to understand the circumstances that effect the organization. This is done by encouraging input from the work force and formulating a strategy that will benefit the organization. Once implemented, an organization can use consultative management indefinitely so long as the organization continues to adapt to changes in the business environment.

Consultative Management

  • Consultative management is a management technique that encourages an organization's entire workforce to contribute towards the advancement of the organization by finding solutions to problems that effect the organization. This management technique recognizes that no matter how experienced a manager is, he will never have a full understanding of what happens on the ground floor of the organization. By directly seeking solutions from the employees, the organization can solve organizational problems from within, without the assistance of outside entities.

Communication

  • Communication is one of the primary aspects of effective consultative management. In organizations that utilize consultative management, the manager will generally hire staff that receives input directly from the employees. The staff then processes the information and brings a summary of the information to the manager. According to "Management of Organizational Behavior," one of the problems with consultative management is that this system can create too many degrees of separation in an organization. This often results in the filtering of information. Therefore, the manager should try to talk directly to the employees as much as possible.

Organizational Behavior

  • Organizational behavior in management is the study of the behavior of individuals within the framework of an organization. This field of study includes aspects of sociology, psychology, communication and management. How to get employees to fully accept and implement a desired behavior is the primary focus of organizational behavior in management. According to "Management of Organizational Behavior," empowering employees to feel like a part of the process goes a long way in changing employee behavior.

  • All organizations both large and small adopt models of behavior. The processes used by the organization will depend on the management style. Consultative management can facilitate employees' willingness to accept any of the behaviors desired by the organization. By allowing management and the organization to understand the needs of the employees, consultative management can change the behavior of the organization. This in turn can change the behavior of individual employees.
