Medford, in Oregon's Rogue Valley area, offersopportunities to hike in Klamath National Forest and Crater Lake National Park. Children in Medford and the neighboring cities – Central Point and Ashland – have access to these parks. Other family-friendly activities include the performing arts, museum tours and boating in the nearby Klamath and Rogue Rivers.

Water Activities

  • The Rogue and Klamath Rivers are less than 10 minutes north of Medford, providing children with kayaking and rafting opportunities. Momentum River Expeditions allows children 7 years and older to ride their kayaks on the Rogue River. The Kokopelli River Guide company offers half-day and full-day tour packages for children and adults. One of the full-day packages, Upper Klamath Whitewater Rafting, includes breakfast and lunch for guests. This trip requires all children to be at least 13 years old. Kokopelli's embarkation point is in Ashland, within 20 minutes of Medford. Kayaking season runs from April through October.

Educational Activities

  • Medford's kids have access to educational classes and workshops at the Kid Time Discovery Museum and Crater Rock Museum in Central Point, less than 10 minutes from Medford. During the school year, Kid Time hosts field trips from Medford's elementary schools. A minimum of 10 students must be in a class. Field trips include arts and crafts classes. The Crater Rock Museum features exhibits on Native American artifacts, fossils and natural rocks, such as agates and minerals. Classes at Crater Rock include silversmithing and knapping arrowheads; children may attend these classes.

Stay Active

  • Throughout the year, Medford hosts youth sport leagues and tournaments. The City of Medford offers leagues and tournaments for baseball, softball, basketball and soccer. Medford is in the process of completing the U.S. Cellular Community Park, a sports complex that will possess 15 fields, including the all-grass Harry & David field. As of April 2011, six of the fields are already in use. Ashland, Medford's neighboring city, is home to the Ashland Little League Baseball organization. This league offers t-ball and pony league for younger children. The Cities of Medford and Ashland provide soccer, baseball, cheerleading and basketball summer camps.

Performing Arts Activities

  • Downtown Medford is home to the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater. This venue hosts plays, concerts, musicals and dance performances year-round. For children, the theater hosts sing-alongs and children's theater. Medford also features the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon, which allows children from all over the Rogue Valley to participate. Located in Ashland, Oregon Shakespeare Festival is 25 minutes from Medford. This theater offers youth-oriented classes and workshops, including the Summer Seminar for High School Juniors. The seminar teaches all aspects of theater, including acting, directing and production.
