Education in commercial banking varies depending on whether the job is administrative or managerial.

A commercial banker needs to attain the right education to handle all banking responsibilities, including managing loan and financial advisers, offering client services and overseeing staff located in certain departments. The educational level needed for a career in commercial banking depends on the entry-level position the worker attains.

  1. Administrative Work

    • If a candidate with only a high school diploma desires to become a commercial banker, he can start from the ground up by taking an office or administrative job. He must have good communication, customer service and math skills to obtain this type of position. He can then gain on-the-job experience to advance in the company. Through this hands-on instruction, the worker can acquire data entry skills to become a data entry and information processing worker, accounting knowledge for a position as a bookkeeper or sales experience to offer bank products to customers.

    Managerial Position

    • An individual who seeks a managerial position in commercial banking must take courses in business administration. The candidate can obtain a bachelor's degree in business administration, as well as a liberal arts degree with a concentration in business administration. If she has a bachelor's degree in a different field, she may still become part of the managerial staff as long as she obtains a master's degree in business administration.

    Commercial Lending

    • If the commercial banker is involved in mortgage lending as a job duty, she must receive proper certification. Through the Bank Administration Institute, or BAI, the commercial banker receives a loan review certificate so she can approve and evaluate loan applications. The commercial banker can also obtain a certified mortgage banker certificate through the Mortgage Bankers Association. This certificate is awarded to commercial bankers who have three years of experience and advanced knowledge in the mortgage field.

    FInancial Sales Agents

    • Commercial bankers in small banks may sell financial services such as investment securities. A person handling such services needs to have a college degree, with a major in accounting, marketing or finance. The commercial banker must also have a license from the National Association of Securities Dealers, or NASD, before he can begin selling securities.
