1990s Fashion Costumes

Denim overalls weren't just for kids during the 90s, adults wore them, too.

If you're looking for a simple costume for a party, look no far than the 1990s for inspiration. From baggy clothing to denim overalls, the '90s were a time where a wide variety of fashion trends went wild. The band Nirvana inspired teenage youths to adopt the grunge look. Fashion from the '90s lends itself to be the perfect look for a party, or just everyday clothing.

Grunge

Mainly inspired by Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana, the grunge look was a prominent party of the 1990s and the look can easily be used as a costume. The main aspect of this look was to appear disheveled with unkempt clothing and uncombed hair. The look involves wearing a flannel shirt over a rock band T-shirt with torn jeans. If possible, tying a denim jacket around your waist can add to the authenticity.

Denim

Denim clothing was big during the 1990s. People wore denim jeans, shorts, overalls and jackets. An all-denim ensemble could make the perfect costume based on the '90s. People wore the jeans with tears and cut the pant legs off to make them into shorts. Some even wore high-waisted jeans. Denim overalls could be worn in two different ways, with both straps hooked or having one strap hooked while the other one hangs open.

Starter Jackets

Starter jackets are jackets that were big during the 1990s. Made by the Starter apparel company, the jackets were typically designed after professional sport teams from the NBA, MLB and NFL. The color of the jackets are based on a team's own colors and the team's logo is also prominently displayed, usually on the front or the back of the jacket. Starter jackets are still made, so it would be easy to track one down for a costume.

Baggy Clothing

Oversized or baggy clothing was big during the 1990s and could easily be replicated as a costume. People wore everything bigger during this time with two or three sizes larger than a person would normally wear. This applied to jeans, sweatshirts and T-shirts. Wearing baggy versions of the grunge or denim look would certainly add to the authenticity of a 1990s costume.
