Interactive games make math fun.

Math is one of the most important subjects for a child to learn. Learning math in primary school helps make sure students do well in math later in life. There are many interactive games you can use with your primary school students. These games cover a wide variety of subjects and can be used in the classroom or at home.

  1. Double Digits

    • Double Digits is a simple interactive adding and subtracting game. This game can be used with kids who are just learning how to count in double digits. The game presents a problem, such as "57+46." There are four possible answers printed along the right-hand side. Kids choose the answer to test their math skills. They can select "Addition" or "Subtraction" at the top of the game. Click on the "New Question" button at the top left to generate a new question to answer. There are an unlimited number of questions your kids can try. Integrate this game into your daily math lessons or give them the URL to play the game at home on their own computer.

    Geometry Games

    • Use these geometry games, from the Johnnie's Math Page website, after you have introduced geometry to your students. Kids can pick from a menu of shapes. Picking a shape places it on the game board. Click on the shape with the mouse and drag it to move it around the game board. Placing the shape next to another shape will "lock" it into place next to that shape. Make larger, more complex shapes by locking multiple simple shapes next to one another. Draw shapes on the board for your kids to copy, or display them on an overhead projector by hooking it up to your computer.

    Dress-Up Math

    • Dress Up Math, available at the Primary Games website, is a combination of dress-up and math money counting games. You must select an outfit for the young girl on the screen. Choose a piece of clothing from the shirt, pants and shoes section. Each piece of clothing is worth a certain amount of money. Select the right clothes to match the money value exactly. There is no penalty for picking the wrong clothing combinations, so kids can experiment with different looks before they put on the right set of clothes. The game gets progressively more difficult as it asks for higher values, but it never gets too hard for your students to control or play.

    Counting Money

    • Counting Money is a money-counting game that focuses on using change to make money. This game is perfect for students who are struggling with making change correctly. It is available to play at the Apples 4 the Teacher website. There are three levels to choose from: easy, medium and hard. Select the level to begin playing. Choose from three helper characters to help you in the game. The helper states the amount of money you must make. Click on the coins to the left of the helper to pick them up. Drag them to the table underneath to place them. The helper states the amount you have placed in the "easy" difficulty but does not do so in the harder levels. Click on the helper when you think you have the right amount of change to see if you are right.
