Ideas for Christmas Concerts

Christmas concerts are a way to get in the holiday spirit and celebrate Christmas. Whether the concert features schoolchildren, talented teens, a church group, seniors, or an assortment of people, a Christmas concert can be a joyous event for all who attend. Many ideas can help make a Christmas concert a festive, celebratory occasion.

  • Set the stage for a Christmas concert by decorating the performance space for the Yuletide. Wrap red ribbon, a holiday garland or evergreen around music stands or the performers' seats. Faux candles provide a safe way to light up the stage with a warm holiday glow. Or, the familiar glimmer of Christmas lights, whether white or multicolored, add holiday flair to the area. For a final touch, set up a big Christmas tree on the stage for all to see.

  • Favorite Christmas songs will make a wonderful concert program, but people striving for something more impressive can give their Christmas concert a specific theme. For example, have a "Christmas Specials" theme that features songs from popular Christmas movies or TV specials, such as "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," "Frosty the Snowman" or "Christmas Time Is Here." For another idea, embark on a "Christmas Time Travel" theme by picking popular yuletide carols that range from medieval tunes to contemporary favorites.

  • Have the concert performers dress in festive holiday clothes. For a low-key event, invite them to wear "Christmas-y" clothes, such as red or green tops, holly print or tacky Christmas sweaters, such as chunky knit sweaters with sequined snowmen or fuzzy Santas. A uniform, such as a deep red choir gown or black slacks and a white top, can be jazzed up with a sprig of holly or some tinsel. Finally, an appearance by Santa or a snowman will put smiles on the faces of audience members.

  • After the concert, continue the holiday spirit by serving platters of appetizers and snacks. Create platters of Christmas cookies, such as gingerbread people, wreath-shaped chocolate cookies topped with cherries, and sugar cookies jazzed up with red and green icing or Christmas sprinkles. White meringues that resemble snowballs make a crunchy, sweet treat. Transform cupcakes into reindeer or snowmen by decorating the cupcakes with icing and candies.
