Character Nursery Themes

A nursery can one of the most enjoyable rooms in the house to decorate, as it is meant to be fanciful and light-hearted. The decor of this space is often based on a theme and that theme is then infused into the room with different elements. Characters from children's books or films are often a theme used for for decorating a baby's nursery and if you are interested in creating a character-themed baby nursery, there are several from which you can choose.

Winnie the Pooh

Winnie the Pooh is a classic children's literature character and he and his friends can serve as the basis for a welcoming and sweet nursery. For this theme, paint the walls pale yellow and hang images of Winnie the Pooh and his friends on the painted walls. Another idea is to use tree stencils to create the Hundred Acre Woods on the walls. You can purchase bedding and accessories that are printed with a Winnie the Pooh theme, or you could dress the crib with a combination of yellow, red and brown linens (the color's of Winnie the Pooh). Place images from the stories in frames and hang them on the walls. Fill a bookshelf with books from the series and set out plush Winnie the Pooh and friends toys.

Nursery Rhymes

Use several characters from different nursery rhymes to decorate your baby's nursery. Paint the walls of this themed room any pastel shade you wish. Make the bed with soft cotton and fleece fabrics in pastel shades. Place images of different nursery rhyme characters, such as Humpty Dumpty and Tom Thumb, in picture frames and hang them on the walls. Affix a glow-in-the-dark moon or a moon shaped night light on the wall and hang a picture of a cow jumping over it. Write lines from different nursery rhymes along the top of the walls, creating a whimsical boarder. Fill shelves with nursery rhyme books.

101 Dalmatians

If you're looking to stray from the traditional pastel colors for your baby's nursery, consider designing the room with a 101 Dalmatians theme. Paint the walls of the room white and use black paint to create random black spots on the walls. Use paint to create a border of puppy prints on the walls, or purchase a wallpaper border that features puppy prints. Place black and white linens on the bed, or purchase linens that feature images of dalmatians. Set out toy dalmatians and pictures of some of the pups from the movie.

Sesame Street

Sesame Street is a beloved educational children's show. The characters from the show can be used to create a fun baby nursery. Any color will work for the walls of this character-themed nursery--green, blue, yellow, pink or purple, perhaps. For the bedding, purchase sheets and a comforter that features images of the characters from the show or use all one color to represent a specific character. For example, yellow for Big Bird, red for Elmo or purple for the Count. Hang images of the characters from the show on the walls of the room. Paint a white plastic hamper with a lid silver and paint "Oscar" across the front of it.
