A collection of shelves for artwork and vases is ideal for tall living room walls.

An especially tall wall in the living room can be a challenge to decorate, particularly if you're going for a new or modern style and don't want to clutter the wall. The right paint color choices, along with signature artwork and even a furniture piece or two, can make the wall a visually appealing and balanced feature in the room. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Modern-style Bookshelf

    • Add a bookshelf in a contrasting color against a tall living room wall to bring focus to the center of the wall and draw the eye away from the wall's extreme tallness. The color pairing will also serve as a way to keep the wall from appearing so overwhelming, such as a black bookshelf against a white wall, or a dark, mahogany bookshelf positioned against a light tan wall. A modern-style bookshelf that has clean, straight lines and thin shelves looks impressive against a tall living room wall and is the ideal accessory to add colorful items like hardback books covered in burgundy and deep browns and candles in eye-catching hues like purple and green. Shelves draw even more attention from the wall's tallness while making the walls slim and sleek shape stand out.

    Collection of Prints

    • Instead of adding one large piece of artwork to the tallest wall in your living room, hang a collection of small and medium-size prints in the center of the wall to make the wall seem a little shorter. The colors used for the artwork will also help make this decorative "trick" especially appealing. For instance, if the wall is a noticeable shade, like burnt orange or cobalt blue, a collection of black and white photos housed in black frames is ideal. Include candid photos of birthday parties, graduation snapshots, pictures of the family pet or shots from the holidays in the collection to make the artwork especially personal. Tall walls painted shades of tan or brown will look even more appealing with a group of sepia-colored photos hung in the wall's center, set in oval, rectangular and square bronze frames for an attractive display of shapes that deflect from the wall's height.

    End Tables

    • If the sofa is positioned against the tall wall, adding end tables that are especially colorful will give balance to the room and keep the wall from appearing too overpowering. For instance, a living room painted in a medium brown with a white sofa can benefit from cherry red end tables on either end of the sofa. The warm shade of red brings the attention to the bottom of the wall. An ornate end table at the edge of a sectional sofa with clawfoot-style legs and painted a bright shade of lime green or turquoise will have the same effect in a living room where "cool" colors are used for decorating.

    Paint

    • Painting a series of stripes in the center of the tall wall will keep the eyes focused on this section of the wall and will make the other decorations in the room more noticeable. For instance, bronze and gold stripes in a living room decorated in shades of brown are elegant and eye-catching and will lead the eye downward to the coffee-brown end tables decorated with lamps that have sienna orange shades, or to the rug, which boasts a collection of burgundy and cinnamon-orange hues. Simply painting half of the tallest wall in the living room a vibrant hue of your choice can make the room appear a little larger or give it a feeling of intimacy. For instance, adding aubergine to the bottom half of the wall has a receding effect that makes the room feel wider; a muted shade of yellow is warm and inviting and makes the living area feel cozier.
