Warlock Pet Changes in "Cataclysm"

The "Cataclysm" expansion for "World of Warcraft" caused drastic changes throughout the game. Even basic mechanics, such as character attributes, received a massive overhaul. Each of the pets used by the Warlock received some changes in the process. These changes were not significant enough to alter the overall role of each summon, but can alter strategy for using each slightly.

  1. Basic Control Changes

    • There are two minor changes that alter how pets are summoned and controlled. The first change is indirectly related to the changes to Soul Burn, a spell that modifies multiple spells. Summoning a pet and casting Soul Burn causes the Warlock to instantly summon his pet, rather than waiting for the normal casting time to complete. In addition, pets, by default, are not controllable by the player as they were prior to "Cataclysm." The Control Demon spell, learned at level 10, must be cast for the player to fully control a demon.

    Imp Changes

    • The Imp received very few changes in "Cataclysm" other than an ability swap. The Imp can no longer use Fire Shield, a buff that increases fire resistance and deals damage to attackers. In its place, the Imp learned Burning Ember, a damage-over-time fire spell.

    Succubus Changes

    • The Succubus melee damage range was increased to allow her to hit targets without standing directly on top of the enemy. Soothing Kiss, a threat reducer that decreased the target's melee speed, is no longer available. The Succubus did gain the Whiplash spell in return. Whiplash damages and knocks back any enemy within five yards of the Succubus.

    Voidwalker Changes

    • The Voidwalker abilities Torment and Suffering swapped roles. Torment deals damage to the current target and taunts all nearby enemies to goad them into attacking the Voidwalker. Suffering is a single-target taunt. These were swapped due to the cooldown timers. Torment can be cast more often than Suffering. It was very difficult for the Voidwalker to tank multiple enemies as a result.

    Felguard Change

    • The Felguard itself did not change significantly in function or availability. It is still a powerful melee pet that is only available for Demonologist-specialized Warlocks. The level at which it is available changed due to the changes in the talent system. Players that specialize in Demonologist gain access to the Felguard at level 10, rather than level 50. This is significant because the Felguard is one of the best solo pets for a Warlock in most situations. This significantly eases leveling up for pet-focused Warlocks.
