Slot machines need maintenance to function properly and like any piece of machinery, they also have the potential to malfunction and need repair. The people who maintain and repair slot machines are known as slot machine technicians. Slot key persons reset machines, perform minor repairs and maintenance and recommend removal of machines for major repairs. Coin, vending and amusement machine repairers perform the major repairs. As of 2009, a slot key person's average hourly pay was $13.73 and her average annual salary was $28,560, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Slot key persons in the 10th percentile earned $17,440 each year; those in the 25th percentile earned $20,970 per year; the median salary was $25,900 per year; those in the 75th percentile earned $32,370 each year; and those in the 90th percentile earned $44,670 per year, the BLS reports.

Illinois was the highest paying state, where salaries averaged $43,280. New Mexico had the most slot key persons per capita; in Illinois, 900 slot key persons earned $20,340 per year on average.
