Manicures and pedicures are popular pampering treatments among women. Whether you go to a salon or give yourself these special treatments at home, you'll want to know what instruments are used and what they are for. Many of the tools can be used for both manicures and pedicures.
Nail Cutter & Nail File
A nail cutter is one of the most important instruments to have because it keeps the nails short and healthy. A nail file is also important to have in the arsenal of a manicure/pedicure kit. Nail files are used after the nail has been trimmed. Nail files can be made out of a variety of materials, including metal, glass and plastic. An emery board is another type of nail file that is very popular. It isn't as rough as some other materials and it doesn't spread disease as easily, either. Nail files are great for shaping the nail.
A nail buffer is great to use in both manicures and pedicures because it gives the nail a natural shine. Nail buffers are usually in a block shape. Some nail buffers will have a different degree of roughness on each side. If you purchase one of these buffers, each side will be numbered in the order you should use it on. Nail buffers have also been known to boost the circulation of blood underneath the nail, which creates healthier nails.
Cuticle trimmers are important because they can prevent the skin around the finger nails and toe nails from looking rough or ragged. Cuticle trimmers cut the dead skin around the nail bed. These are often used after the cuticles have been pushed back with a cuticle stick. You will just need to cut the excess dead skin with the trimmers and keep the live skin intact. Some people do not cut cuticles because cuticles can act as a barrier and prevent infections, but it is your choice on whether you want to cut them or leave them alone.
One item that is used for pedicures specifically is the foot file. A foot file is a flat file used to remove calluses and dead skin from the feet. It is most commonly used on the bottom of the foot and the heel. Since we are constantly on our feet, they need special attention. There are different kinds of foot files. Some are extra coarse and designed to remove calluses, while others are fine and used to buff the foot at the end of the pedicure.
