English as a Second Language (ESL) refers to the English language learning process of a person whose first language is not English. Many universities offer ESL programs as a type of support for adults seeking better job opportunities or students who want a future university career. Some of the universities in Ohio offer an orientation class as part of the ESL program so that students and working adults who are new to the United States can get some cultural background.

  1. University of Dayton

    • The Intensive English Program at the University of Dayton offers foreign students instruction in pronunciation, listening, grammar, writing and reading. Classes in this program are small with an emphasis in individual attention. The program also offers conversation partner and tutoring program. Instructors are highly knowledgeable and the Intensive English Program at the University of Dayton is an approved member of the American Association of Intensive English Programs.

    Ohio University, Department of Linguistics

    • The Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE) offers two programs of study, full-time Intensive English Study and semi-intensive English Study. The OPIE offers four levels of intensive English. Full-time levels are built around a core class and students meet three hours per day with two hours of support classes. Semi-intensive classes are divided into graduate and undergraduate sections. Semi-intensive classes focus on the language and academic skills necessary for the student's success. Classes at the OPIE are small and personalized and the communicative approach to learning oral and written English are emphasized.

    Franklin University

    • The ESL program at Franklin University helps improve a student's English so they will be prepared for their degree programs. Franklin University has four levels in its ESL program. The first level is an orientation class that helps students who are new to the United States and the university system. The other three levels begin with intermediate, high-intermediate and finishing with advanced. Admission requirements for the ESL program include a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and an IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

    Cleveland State University

    • The Intensive English Language program (IELP) has full-time and part-time study available for students. It is part of a four-year university study program. The IELP prepares students for university work by offering classes that integrate the different language skills and practice. They offer three core courses: Integrated Reading & Writing, Integrated Listening & Speaking, and Grammar. The school also offers support courses: Vocabulary Development, Pronunciation, and Conversation. Classes are offered in 15-week semesters and are divided into four levels of instruction: high elementary through advanced. Classes are also small and personalized.
