Creative Binding Ideas for Oversize Paper

Learn how to bind books, regardless of the paper size.

Don't let odd shaped or oversize papers stop you from binding them into a manageable book form. Create a book you can read at your leisure or bind an important report for work with readily available materials. Inexpensive binding supplies can be found at your local office supply, craft or art stores that are user friendly alternatives to professional binding services.

  1. Gorilla Glue

    • Stack the oversize papers together. Grasp them and gently tap them on the table to bring all the papers into alignment. Do this on the bottom and on one side of the stack of papers. Secure the papers together with binder clips. Slightly dampen the edge of the papers with a cotton ball. Rub a generous amount of Gorilla Glue across the same edge of the oversize papers. Set the stack aside and let it dry for 24 to 48 hours. Cut a piece of heavy card stock large enough to wrap fully around the oversize papers, extending about 1/2 inch over the top, bottom and side. Lightly score the card stock so that it bends around the spine of the papers. Adhere the bound side of the oversized papers to the cardstock with Gorilla Glue.

    Binder Rings

    • Use a two-hole hole punch and punch holes into the oversize papers at regular intervals. Make sure to hole punch all of the oversize papers in the same location so the holes line up. Use adhesive reinforcing labels on each side of the oversize papers to protect the holes and prevent the papers from tearing. Open binder rings and slip the papers onto the binder rings. Close the binder rings to complete the binding.

    Ribbon

    • Use a hole punch and hole punch the oversize papers in two rows, one row close to the edge of the oversize papers and one row set in about 1/2 inch from the first row of hole punches. String short lengths of ribbon through the two holes and tie them into a knot, leaving a short amount of ribbon hanging loose.

    Leather

    • Hole punch each sheet of oversize paper in a row. Keep the holes close together. Protect each hole by applying adhesive reinforcement stickers on both sides of each paper to prevent it from tearing. Cut a long length of leather and thread it through the top hole. Pull it through until the top hole is in the middle of the leather string. Cross the leather string in an X shape and thread both ends through the next hole. Cross it again in an X shape and thread it through the next hole. Continue until you reach the bottom. Tie the leather into a knot and cut off the excess.
