Churches celebrate Christmas in many ways.

In addition to the typical religious services held by Christian churches everywhere, many religious organizations host an annual Christmas party for their members as well. Since Christmas is a busy time for all Christians, it's best to start planning early and have all details in place well before the start of the season. There are several ideas you can implement in your church's Christmas celebration. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Decorations

    • While there's nothing wrong with using a Christmas tree and twinkling lights to decoration your church's recreation area, also include decor that emphasizes the reason for the season. Have the Sunday school classes make colorful posters and murals decorated with religious images. Pictures of the annunciation, Mary and Joseph in a stable and the three wise men following the star are suitable options. Spread straw on the floor, set up a life-size nativity scene in the corner of the church and use lanterns and flameless candles to safely and softly light the scene.

    Food

    • Instead of the traditional potluck dinner, take up a collection and have your church's holiday celebration dinner catered. Shop around for the best price, and offer a selection of foods at a buffet or sit-down dinner. Choose cupcakes iced with red and green frosting for dessert, or consider purchasing or making a large sheet cake decorated like a birthday cake for Jesus. Serve with peppermint candy ice cream in red, white and green.

    Activities

    • Show a classic Christmas movie after your church's holiday dinner. Set up folding chairs and show the film on the biggest screen possible. Movies such as the "The Nativity Story," "The Bishop's Wife" and "It's a Wonderful Life" are all options. Follow with an appropriately rated secular film about the holidays for the kids to enjoy. "Home Alone," "Jingle All the Way" and "The Santa Clause" are possibilities. Play charades, using the titles of Christmas carols and movies as the topics for each person to act out.

    Presents

    • Rather than placing the expense of providing gifts on the church, ask everyone who wants to participate to bring a gift to the holiday celebration. Have each person buy a gift suitable for the same sex, which falls within a predetermined price range. Have the men, women, girls and boys each form a circle of their own. Have each person hold the gift they brought. Play Christmas music and ask the participants to pass the gifts around the circle. When the music stops, each person keeps the gift that is in her hands at that moment.
