Native American Journalism Scholarships

The only source of journalism scholarships limited specifically to Native-American students is the Native American Journalists Association. Because scholarships limited to Native-American journalism majors are scarce, consider applying for journalism scholarships available to all minority populations as well. Several scholarships are offered to minority journalism majors, most of them offered by individual post-secondary institutions.

  1. Native American Journalists Association

    • The Native American Journalists Association offers between 10 and 15 scholarships to Native-American journalism majors throughout the United States each year. NAJA scholarships are valued at between $500 and $5,000. To be eligible, an applicant must be a dues-paying member of the NAJA. NAJA scholarships are available to undergraduate students, graduate students and graduating high school seniors. April 1 is the annual deadline for application.

    Radio Television Digital News Association

    • The Radio Television Digital News Association offers two scholarships limited to minority students pursuing degrees in journalism. The Ed Bradley Scholarship is awarded in amounts of up to $10,000. The Carole Simpson Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $2,000 each year. To be eligible, an applicant must be an undergraduate sophomore or junior, and must intend to pursue a career in electronic journalism. The annual deadline for application is May 3. Applications must be submitted online.

    Ohio Newspaper Association

    • The Ohio Newspaper Association offers annual scholarship support to minority journalism students, including Native-American students. The ONA Minority Scholarship is valued at $1,500. To be eligible, an applicant must be a graduating senior from an Ohio high school, must be planning to pursue a journalism degree within the state and must have a high school GPA of at least 2.5. The annual deadline for application is March 31. Electronic applications are available on the ONA website.

    School-Specific Scholarships

    • Many individual schools offer at least one journalism scholarship limited to minority students. Native-American and native Alaskan journalism majors at the University of Alaska may be eligible for support through the $500 "Anchorage Daily News" Journalism Scholarship. The Greenspun College of Urban Affairs administers the Step Up Scholarship to attending minority students in journalism. Columbia Journalism School offers several scholarships to minority students, including the Dow Jones Foundation Scholarship and the Philip L. Graham Fund Minority Scholarship. Minority journalism majors at Murray State University in Kentucky may be eligible for support through the John Fetterman Minority Journalism Scholarship.
