Cash Register Add-Ons for QuickBooks

Transferring sales data from a separate cash register can be a tedious process.

QuickBooks is financial accounting software for small businesses. Since it's mainly a computer based program, there are limitations to its use in certain situations. In the case of cash registers, which many small businesses use, QuickBooks offers access to what it calls add-ons. An add-on is a separate software and/or hardware configuration that handles the applications and functions that the QuickBooks software alone can't.

  1. Intuit Cash Register Plus

    • The Intuit Cash Register Plus is a comprehensive set of tools that comes with a working register, a drawer and a printer. The data from sales for the day are transferred to your company's QuickBooks file at the end of the day via a USB cord. The advantage to using this option is that the items you sell can be imported directly from your QuickBooks file and the information on the cost of goods sold for each item and the sales price are all stored to prevent errors by employees. The cash tendered and credit card sales are separated and added to the "Deposits" list for easy bank deposit. As of April of 2011, this product costs about $300 for the whole set.

    Intuit Point of Sale

    • The Intuit Point of Sale software package gives you the option of purchasing a bar-code scanner to make pricing and ringing up sales much easier. Without the bar code scanner, you can still enter in the sales as you would normally by typing in the code number associated with the item being purchased. As of April of 2011, a bar code scanner is under $100. In 2010, Intuit integrated the photo ID of items so that when a bar code is scanned, an image of the item appears to avoid confusion with incorrectly priced goods. With the POS software, credit card transactions are processed on the same screen you use with QuickBooks. Use of this option gives you the function of having a cash register, without actually having the drawer that goes with it.

    AccuPOS

    • The AccuPOS system is a third-party software package developed by Attitude POSitive Company. This system is geared specifically for retail stores and restaurants. The function of this system is very similar to the Cash Register Plus system, with the added advantage of being able to handle multiple locations or for situations when the QuickBooks server is offsite from the business. The downside to this package is the cost, which as of April of 2011 is between $595 and $1,295 for each installation.

    Maitre'D Software Suite

    • The Maitre'D Software Suite, developed by Posera Software Company, like the AccuPOS is specifically geared toward one industry: the food service and hospitality industry. There are a lot of considerations in the restaurant industry that a Cash Register Plus system needs to be tweaked to handle. These include the cost of food that's wasted or returned, a breakdown of the costs of condiments and additions to available foods for sale. You also have the option to use the bar code reader to scan bar code labels for inventory counting or receiving. This data is then transferred to your QuickBooks file when uploading the day's data.
