Peanut butter-stuffed celery provides a healthy snack.

Chunky or creamy, peanut butter is eaten by itself with a spoon, on sandwiches or used in a variety of other ways. It is quickly and easily used by older children and teenagers when preparing simple meals, making it possible for them to eat healthy while you are away from home. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Sandwich Ideas

    • Choosing 100 percent whole wheat or multigrain bread is a good start to a healthy sandwich. A tablespoon of peanut butter is spread over one slice, then a fruit base is added. This may be jam, preserves or fruit slices. Use sliced bananas or apples for this purpose, or try pear slices. Serve this sandwich with vegetable sticks and milk. Peanut butter is a spread for other foods as well. English muffins and slices of pita bread will benefit from a layer of peanut butter. Pancakes will as well, especially when you top the peanut butter with diced apple or banana slices. Tortillas with peanut butter and jam spread on top are rolled up to make simple snacks.

    Dips

    • Use peanut butter as a dip for vegetables. Place the peanut butter in a small cup at the center of a plate. Put carrot and celery sticks on the plate, as well as broccoli and cauliflower. Make a dip for fruit by mixing peanut butter with some plain yogurt. Place this in the cup, and surround it with slices or chunks of sturdy fruit such as apples and pears. Strawberries and grapes make a nice addition. Either of these options make a good snack.

    Fillings

    • Peanut butter is often used as a filling for other foods. Celery is stuffed with peanut butter. This goes along with meals and is used as a snack. Cracker sandwiches are made by spreading one cracker with peanut butter, then topping it with another cracker. Jams, jellies or preserves are used in combination with the peanut butter for these sandwiches, as is marshmallow fluff.

    Baking

    • Use peanut butter when enjoying baked goods as well. Add some to white frosting to frost a mayonnaise or chocolate cake with, or mix it with cream cheese to top a zucchini cake. Use some to top chocolate chip muffins straight from the oven, or make some peanut butter cookies.
