What Are the Duties of a Good Teacher?
Teachers play an important role in educating and developing the minds and intellect of students. To become a teacher, individuals need to earn a least a bachelor's degree and obtain a state teaching license. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2009, middle school teachers earned a median salary of $50,770 per year, while secondary teachers earned $52,200 per year.

Prepare Lessons

Teachers must prepare daily lessons and incorporate lectures, videos, overhead projections and slides to educate students. Students may follow a specific textbook, and lessons may be based on the day's readings. Through assigned readings, students are prepared for the day's lessons and are able to ask questions about any material they didn't understand. In addition to preparing students for assignments and exams, the lessons offer students a foundational understanding of a subject that they can take with them as they continue their education.

In order to help students understand the material, teachers may promote interactive learning and conduct experiments. Conducting experiments offers a hands-on approach to the material and coincides with lectures to encourage students to develop their knowledge and skills. Projects are going to vary depending on the subject. This is also an opportunity for students to work together in groups and apply theoretical concepts learned in lessons into practical applications.

Good teachers also must evaluate students' performance by grading assignments and tests. This is an opportunity for teachers to determine which students understand the material and identify those who are struggling to understand the lessons. Teachers may spend extra time with students who are having a hard time with the subject. Additional duties include assigning students to write papers and essays, complete worksheets and take multiple-choice tests.
Monitor Student Behavior

In order to ensure that the classroom remains a learning environment, teachers must monitor student behavior and ensure that everyone remains on task. Teachers make sure that students don't become disruptive or cheat on assignments and tests. Students who become disruptive may need to be disciplined or sent to the principal's office. It's also important that teachers also reward students who participate in class, answer questions and exhibit a positive attitude toward the material.
