Indiana Cosmetology Instructor License Requirements

Cosmetology instructors work in beauty schools, colleges and other postsecondary institutions, teaching students how to perform services on the hair, skin and nails. In Indiana, all cosmetology instructors must gain a license from the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology, and candidates must have a valid license as a cosmetologist before applying for an instructor license.

  1. Initial License

    • Only candidates who are at least 18 years of age may gain a license as a cosmetologist in Indiana. Candidates also must show proof of having completed at least 10th grade for eligibility. Those who meet both requirements must complete 1,500 hours of cosmetology training from a school approved by the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology. After the training, candidates must pass both a written and a practical examination.

    Education

    • All candidates for cosmetology instructor training in Indiana must complete a state-approved training program to qualify for licensing. The program must last for a minimum of 1,000 hours. Prospective instructors must attend a school that has approval of the Indiana Board of Cosmetology. Eligible institutions include private beauty academies and public adult education schools sponsored by Indiana school districts. The training consists of both classroom based instruction and hands-on practice providing instruction to students.

    Examination

    • Upon completion of the required training, prospective cosmetology instructors in Indiana must pass a written examination. The test is taken using a computer at Pearson Vue professional Testing Centers. As of April 2011, the exam was given in Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Merrillville and Terre Haute. The exam consists of 20 experimental, unscored questions and 65 scored questions. Of the scored questions, 15 relate to state laws governing cosmetology instruction, while the remaining items deal with federal requirements and general knowledge.

    Reciprocity

    • Cosmetology instructors who already hold a license from another state in the field can qualify for an Indiana license through the state's reciprocity program. Provided they have an equivalent of 1,000 hours of training, reciprocity candidates can receive the Indiana license with no additional education. The Indiana Board of Cosmetology will not accept apprenticeship training toward the 1,000 hours; candidates can receive credit for 700 hours of training for each year that they worked as a licensed instructor. Out-of-state instructors whose home states required that they receive at least a 70 percent on the instructor licensing examination do not need to take the Indiana exam.
