Filtering water through the pitcher removes contaminants, including cadmium, chlorine, lead, copper, mercury and other heavy metals, and chemicals, including insecticides. Average reduction of chlorine is 98.8 percent, and reduction of cadmium ranges from 97.5 to 99.2 percent depending on water acidity (pH). Copper reduction ranges from 74.3 to 98.4 percent and mercury reduction is from 85.0 to 92.3 percent. This performance meets or exceeds pertinent NSF International and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards for water filtration.

In addition, a cartridge that adds fluoride to water is available for the Barrier Premia Aqua Blue pitcher, as is a larger, 95-gallon standard filter.
