Ideas for Funerals in Lieu of Flowers
It's tradition in many cultures to send a family flowers when a loved one passes away. Although this gesture is appreciated, often the family receives so many flower arrangements from well wishers that they simply don't know what to do with all of them. If you're unsure if flowers are the most appropriate gift, there are many other ways to honor the deceased.

Charitable Contribution
-
Make a donation to charity in honor of the deceased person. Choose a charity that was close to her heart, if she was an avid supporter of one in particular. If she received services from hospice or belonged to a church, these are also appropriate places to give a donation to. If none of these ideas are applicable, simply give a donation in her name to a charity that you support.
Book
-
If the deceased was an avid reader, donate a book to your local library in honor of him. Libraries typically place a card in the front cover of donated books, noting who gave the book to the library or who it was given in honor of. If you know what his favorite book was, choose that. Otherwise, you can just donate money to the library to be used towards the purchase of a book of the library's choice.

Food
-
The last thing the family of the deceased may feel like doing is making dinner or even going out to a restaurant. Help them out by dropping food off at their home. Bake a casserole, a batch of cookies, a pan of lasagna or anything else that will be easy for them to either heat up for dinner or serve to friends and family that stop by to pay their condolences.
Letter
-
Write a letter to a family member of the deceased, explaining how much the loved one meant to you. Tell stories of fun times the two of you had together and nice things the person did for you. This will be very meaningful to the family, as they will have something to read time and time again to remember their loved one by.
