Theme
-
A theme should typically be selected as the first order of business in planning the party. The theme will impact every other dimension of the party and can also serve as inspiration for other party elements. Choose a theme that highlights the youth of the baby as well as the milestone birthday. For example, hold a party with a superhero theme for a "super" first birthday. The party could also have a baby animal zoo theme. Invite guests to come with their babies and children dressed up in accordance to the theme, as superheros and animals.
Activity
-
Incorporate the selected theme into an activity for the children at the party to take part in, even if they are a mere 1 year old. For example, hire a face painter to add the finishing touches on the children's costumes. For a zoo themed party, she could add the appropriate whiskers, spots or fur to a child's face to complete the ensemble. For a superhero party, thunderbolts and warrior paint will be exciting as well as complementing to the costumes. Keep an instant camera on hand to snap photos of the children as keepsake party favors for the parents.

Refreshments
-
Your refreshments can become an eye catching and memorable element of the first birthday party. Incorporate your party theme, as well as the one year milestone, into as much of the food as possible. Create a fruit sculpture that depicts an animal, or bake cookies in the shape of the number one. Craft cupcakes to resemble animals using icing and candy or frost a cake in the shape of a superhero with a "1" on his chest.
Decorations
-
Create an other-worldly environment by transforming the party venue into a scene that depicts your party scene. For a baby animal theme, decorate the room to resemble an African safari. Place green throw rugs on the floor and hang streamers across and from the ceiling to create a forest canopy. Position some flowers or even colorful balloons to create the number "1" on a prominent wall. Scatter real and/or fake flowers in vibrant colors around the room. For a superhero party, create a whimsical environment that makes guests feel as though they are actual superheroes flying through the sky. Hang silver, black and white balloons from the ceiling to create a starry sky. Cover the floor in green and blue rugs or paper, to resemble the Earth far below. On the walls, hang poster pictures of flying superheroes with the number one on their chest or capes.
