Welders and fabricators work in most areas of manufacturing. Welders use extreme heat to permanently bond pieces of metal that will in turn create products. Fabricators assemble those parts to create whole goods such as cars, computers and household appliances. The amount of money welders and fabricators receive depends upon the type of industry in which they work.
On average, welders in the U.S. earned $36,630 as of May 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those working in architectural and structural metals manufacturing earn an average of $33,330 a year, while those working in agriculture, construction and mining machinery manufacturing earn an average of $35,610. The industry of motor vehicle body and trailer manufacturing offers an average salary of $33,330 to welders, and those working in other general purpose machinery manufacturing earn an average of $35,410.
Structural Metal Fabricators
Fabricators working with positioning and fitting metal products earn an average income of $35,080 as of the date of publication. Those working in architectural and structural metals manufacturing earn an annual salary average of $34,760, while those in other fabricated metal product manufacturing earn an average of $33,380. Metal fabricators that deal with ship and boat building earn a mean of $37,870 annually.
Fabricators that work with fiberglass products earn an average income of $29,270 as of the date of publication. Those working with products for ship and boat building earn approximately $30,620, while those working in plastics product manufacturing earn $27,120. In aerospace product or motor vehicle body and trailer manufacturing, salary averages for fiberglass fabricators are $31,680 and $29,590 respectively.
Fabricators who assemble electrical and electronic equipment earn an average salary of $30,690 as of the date of publication. In the industry of semiconductor and other electronic component manufacturing, the average income is $30,640. Navigational, measuring, electromedical and control instruments manufacturing average $32,970. Electrical fabricators also working in electrical equipment manufacturing, earn an average of $29,450 a year.
Engine and Machine Fabricators
Fabricators responsible for assembling machines and engines make $37,150 annually, as of the date of publication. Those working in the industry of motor vehicle parts manufacturing earn $41,810 a year, and those in other general purpose machinery manufacturing earn $33,660 a year. Fabricators working in engine, turbine and power transmission equipment manufacturing make approximately $32,950 annually.
