Tropical rainforests are located near the equator in regions such as South and Central America, Brazil, West Africa, Southeast Asia and Oceania, and are home to a vast variety of animal and plant species. They are exquisite places to visit; however, to fully enjoy your trip you must be prepared and be aware of the appropriate clothing items you need to wear in this type of environment.
Although the weather may be hot and humid, cover up skin in the tropical rainforest to protect against insects, vines and other plants with thorns. Long-sleeve shirts and pants are ideal. Those made from light cotton are breathable and will keep you cool. Avoid jeans, as they will weigh you down when wet and do not dry easily. Also stay away from tight clothes that could restrict your movement. Lightweight jackets are ideal for when it gets colder.
Regular swimsuits are fine to wear when swimming. Avoid wetsuits as they are restrictive and could also cause you to become overheated in the warm weather. Check with your guide beforehand to make sure the area you are in is safe to swim in. In places such as the Amazon, there could be stingrays, piranha, electric eels and other wildlife around that put your life in danger. There may also be concerns over unexpected currents.
Wear appropriate and comfortable shoes in the rainforest, because even something as minor as a blister can easily become infected and turn into a septic wound. Bring an extra pair along with you in case one set gets wet. Also, in the morning before you put on your shoes, shake them out first as scorpions or other insects may have made a home in them overnight.
Pack a light day pack when going on extended hikes; heavy packs will become tiresome. Cotton shirts and pants are best for hiking because they will keep you cooler than synthetics. Cotton/polyester blends are an alternative that provide the comfort and breathability of cotton, and the quick drying ability of polyester. Additionally, you will need a few pairs of socks and some quality hiking boots.
