American Iron and Steel Institute grade 1144 steel is a medium carbon steel most commonly manufactured in the cold rolling process. Also referred to as a stress-proof steel, 1144 has excellent strength, wear and hardness properties. Like other medium carbon steels 1144 can be hardened and heat treated after shaping.
American Iron and Steel Institute 1144, like all steels, is primarily composed of iron. It also contains carbon, four-tenths to .48 percent, manganese, 1.35 to 1.65 percent, phosphorous, less than .04 percent and sulfur, .24 to .33 percent. The relatively high carbon and manganese properties give the steel added strength and toughness.
Cold rolled 1144 has a density of 7.87 grams per cubic centimeter or .284 pounds per cubic inch. It has a shear modulus of 80 GPa or 11,600 ksi. The steel has a Poissons ration of .290, which is typical for most steels.
Hardness and Toughness
The 1144 steel has a Brinell hardness of 212 in its cold rolled form from the mill. Other measurements of its hardness are a 235 Knoop hardness, 94 on the Rockwell B scale, 16.0 on the Rockwell C scale and 223 on the Vickers hardness scale. It has an ultimate tensile strength of 705 MPa, a tensile strength of 420 MPa and an elongation of 21 percent before breaking.
Other properties for cold rolled 1144 include a .0000170 ohm centimeters electrical resistivity and a specific heat of .472 Joules per gram degree Celsius. It also has a 51.9 Watts per meter degree Kelvin.
