How to Become a Navy Seabee

The Navy Construction Battalion, or Navy Seabees, is a team of construction professionals and engineers. The skilled personnel of this group have many roles and responsibilities in the construction trades, including electricians, mechanics, builders and equipment operators. Before you become a Navy Seabee, however, you must enlist in the U.S. Navy. In order to join the Navy, you must meet certain requirements.

Fill out an application at your local recruiting office.

Show proof of age and citizenship. You must be between the ages of 17 and 34, and d you must be a U.S. citizen, to join the Navy. Provide documents, including your birth certificate and Social Security card, to prove your age and citizenship.

Show proof of education. You must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED to enlist in the Navy. You may be asked to provide high school transcripts.

Take and pass a drug and alcohol test. You must take two urinalysis tests, and a recruiter will ask you questions about prior drug and alcohol use. You must answer these question honestly.

Submit medical and background information. A Navy recruiter may explore your medical history, traffic offense history and criminal history.

Take and pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). This aptitude test measures your strengths and weaknesses. The Navy will use the results of this test to determine if you're a detail-oriented, resourceful and creative person. These are the attributes of Navy Seabee personnel.

Submit to a physical examination. The physical consists of basic tests, including blood and urine work, hearing and visual exams and simple flexibility tests.

Attend a pre-enlistment interview. A counselor will ask you questions about your background and your visions for your future as a Navy Seabee. Answer all questions honestly. If any further testing is required, the counselor will alert you at this time.

Sign your enlistment contract and attend the Oath of Enlistment Ceremony.

Begin boot camp. Basic training lasts for five to seven weeks. Training will offer you the specialized skills that you need to excel in your career as a Navy Seabee.

Complete boot camp and train at Seabee "A" school is in Gulfport, Mississippi. The 12-week program consists of hands-on training and group classwork. Students learn skills that will help them become successful builders, utilitiesmen, construction electricians, construction mechanics, engineering aids, steelworkers and equipment operators.

Receive on-the-job training to master your trade. Trained Seabees have many opportunities for promotion to higher ranks.
