Sam Walton Scholarships
The Walmart Foundation has a stated mission of improving the lives of individuals through financial contributions and volunteerism, and concentrates on the focus of areas of education, workforce development, environmental sustainability, and health and wellness. As part of its commitment to education, the Walmart Foundation offers the annual Sam Walton Community Scholarship to college students throughout the United States.

Award Information

Approximately 2,600 Sam Walton Community Scholarships are awarded annually in the amount of $3,000, as of 2011. These scholarships are one-time awards that are not renewable. Funds received through this program may only be applied to studies at the undergraduate level. Recipients may use Sam Walton Community Scholarship funds to defray the cost of tuition, educational fees, textbooks or on-campus room and board.
Eligibility

To be eligible, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and must be a high school senior or home-schooled senior about to graduate or earn a GED. An applicant must also be able to demonstrate financial need, must have taken either the ACT or SAT, and must have a high school GPA of at least 2.5 on a scale of 4.0. Walmart employees and their dependents are not eligible to receive this scholarship.

How to Apply

The first step is to register or create an account, which may be done on the Walmart Foundation website. After you do this, you will automatically be directed to take an eligibility quiz. If you pass, the application will launch automatically. Your application must be submitted electronically. If you are selected as a semifinalist, you must mail or fax the following supporting documentation to the Walmart Foundation: a copy of your high school transcript, home school report, or GED documentation, a copy of your ACT or SAT score report and a copy of the first page of last year's federal income tax return.
Application Timeline

Online applications are available between November 1 and January 31 of each academic year. All electronic applications must be submitted by the annual deadline of January 31. Semifinalists will be notified by email by February 22. If selected as a semifinalist, your supporting documentation must be received by the scholarship committee no later than March 8. Scholarship recipients will be notified by email in early May. Checks will be mailed to recipients after August 1.
