Network engineers need to have a number of technical qualifications but also need leadership skills.

    • A bachelor's degree is typically necessary to work as a computer network engineer, but as the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes, some positions may be available to those with an associate's degree. According to the bureau, the most common types of undergraduate majors pursued by those who eventually assume positions as network engineers include those in management of information systems, information science and computer science. In actuality, no specific undergraduate major is required so long as the applicant has sufficient technical knowledge and the ability to manage projects. Some positions may require the completion of an MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree with an emphasis in information systems.

    Experience

    • Experience can also be a crucial factor for many network engineering positions. According to the BLS, many network engineers and administrators begin their careers by working as computer support specialists or in other non-supervisory roles. Individuals who have a wide background in implementing different types of networks and in a wide variety of other technical areas will more likely be able to advance to positions of leadership.

    Technological Requirements

    • Network engineers need to have technical knowledge of a variety of different types of computer hardware and software. Network engineers need to have knowledge of configuration management software programs such as Microsoft Windows Sysprep, application management software, patch and update management software and automated installation software. Network monitoring software knowledge is also required. Engineers need to be familiar with Dartware InterMapper, ZABBIX software and VERITAS NerveCenter. Administration software, network security software and various types of virus protection software programs. Computer network engineers need to be able to implement different types of networks such as wide area networks and local area networks, depending upon the needs of their employer.

    Leadership Skills

    • Leadership and project management skills are essential to the computer network engineer. Computer network engineers need to have excellent communications skills in order to carry out the implementation of various computer network configurations. They often work with a team of other technical experts or workers to install and configure all aspects of the computer network. According to the BLS, network engineers also need to be task- and detail-oriented, being able to carry on several different projects at the same time.
