Fifth grade students begin to apply math to the real world, such as finding the volume of this cone.

Ohio adopted the Common Core State Standards Initiative in 2010 and it will become effective in the 2014-15 school year. Every grade level in Ohio will have to meet state regulated math standards, which means there are certain skills the teacher needs to convey to students before placement into the next math level. Ohio fifth grade math students will have six specific math skills required before attempting sixth grade math.

  1. General Math Skills

    • Ohio expects fifth grade students to graduate to sixth grade with expertise in specific general math skills. The students will be able to use abstract and quantitative reasoning. They will also be able to use appropriate tools for math solving and make use of proper math structure. Additionally, the state of Ohio expects fifth grade math students to use viable mathematical arguments, critique the work of others and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

    Base Ten Operations

    • Base 10 operations involves decimals, such as 0.10 being expressed as "one tenth of a full measurement." Ohio's fifth grade students are expected to understand and express these numbers and their meanings. The base 10 concept will be grasped and easily expressed at the end of fifth grade. The decimal system will be understood to the hundredths and basic operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division will be completed with whole numbers as well as decimal numbers.

    Algebra

    • The algebraic ability of an Ohio fifth grade student includes the ability to interpret relationships as well as patterns. For example, in a sequence of events or numerical lines, the student will discern what comes next in the sequence. Numerical expressions will also be mastered when students learn to complete a math problem involving more than one mathematical operation, such as addition and subtraction included in the same number sentence.

    Measurement

    • Measuring in Ohio's fifth grade math classrooms reaches beyond the basics to measurement conversions and understanding volume. Fifth grade students are expected to successfully convert like measurement units within a given system; for example, Ohio's fifth graders will understand one meter is equal to 100 centimeters while one foot is equal to 12 inches. Students will also learn how to measure volume and apply volume measurements to multiplication and division problems.

    Fractions

    • Ohio's fifth grade students extend fraction knowledge through learning to apply basic operations to fractions. Students begin to add and subtract fractions; once this skill is grasped the class moves on to multiplication and division of fractions. This math section is an extension of fourth grade fractions where students learn fraction basics, such as what makes a fraction and fraction functions.

    Geometry

    • Graphing becomes important in the fifth grade classroom in Ohio. Students learn to graph real world problems with the use of a coordinate plane. Students learn terms such as "axis" and they learn how to place points on the axis of a graph. Shapes reappear in fifth grade as well when students learn to identify a two dimensional shape by its properties. For example, students will classify shapes by measurements such as volume and corners, such as obtuse compared to acute triangles.
