It is simple to replicate the expensive store bought costumes.

Once a year, at Halloween, children and adults alike enjoy dressing up in costume to attend events such as themed parties and trick-or-treating. The custom of wearing costumes has been practiced for hundreds of years and is still practiced all over the world today. Many stores offer expensive costumes that are easy to replicate at home. With a little imagination and a few basic craft skills, creating a costume to impress at Halloween is easy.

  1. Witch

    • A witch's costume is possibly one of the most popular choices for girls and women to wear at Halloween. However, there is an alternative to the expensive store bought versions. The two most iconic items of a witch's attire are a pointy hat and broom stick. Create the hat by forming a cone out of rolled up newspaper sheets. Cut out a large circle from a piece of cardboard to create the base. Draw a circle in the center of base and cut it out so that it will sit on your head. Paint the hat black and wear it with a black dress and old broomstick.

    Black Cat

    • Black cats are surrounded with superstition making them a good option when it comes to Halloween costumes. Team a black leotard with black leggings or pantyhose to form the basis of the costume. Use a black kohl pencil or black face paint to draw whiskers onto your cheeks. Dab a small amount of red lipstick or face paint onto your nose. If the costume is for an adult, apply black liquid eyeliner to your eyelids to give the appearance of large cat-like eyes. Cut out two triangles from black cardboard for the ears and attach to a hairband.

    Zombie

    • A zombie costume is equally suitable for boys or girls. Use scissors to cut the edges of an old pair of trousers and shirt to give them a torn appearance. Backcomb the hair slightly and apply a small amount of talcum powder. Apply white face paint to the cheeks, forehead and chin to give the face a washed-out look. If you would like to be a little more experimental, use red face paint or fake blood available from joke stores to create a wound to the face or arm.

    Pirate

    • Halloween costumes do not necessarily have to be scary or spooky. A pirate costume is inexpensive to create and simple to make. Match a stripe top with a pair of old black trousers. Cut into the bottom of the trouser legs to create a jagged appearance. Make an eye-patch using a piece of black card-stock and elastic. Carry a toy sword or create one from card-stock to complete the outfit.
