Use your imagination to make interesting sugar cookies.

Sugar cookies are some of the most versatile cookies. According to Food Timeline, early sugar cookies, originating from Medieval Arab culture, were sugar cakes similar to biscuits that were modified by Europeans throughout the 16th century. Early English sugar cookies were called jumbles and the primary ingredients were butter, sugar, flour and eggs. The same ingredients are the base for modern day sugar cookies. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Use Colored Sugar

    • Sugar cookies can easily be decorated for any holiday. Try rolling the sugar cookie dough in orange tinted sugar for Halloween or sprinkle red and green sugar in alternate stripes for Christmas. Almost every holiday has colors associated with it that will allow you to customize sugar cookies for a particular holiday. The baked cookies will help make your holidays look more festive.

    Experiment With Flavors

    • Add an interesting flavor to sugar cookies to make them unique. Try adding some citrus rind or juice instead of vanilla. Experiment with rum or liqueur to create sophisticated sugar cookies that adults will enjoy.

    Frosted Sugar Cookies

    • Make sugar cookies with refrigerated dough that is spread out thin with a rolling pin. Use cookie cutters to create interesting shapes. Bake the cookies, let them cool and then decorate them with frosting. Once the cookies are baked and have cooled, insert a plain pastry tip into a pastry bag that has been filled halfway with frosting and then squeeze out the frosting to make letters or designs on the cookies. Use the pastry bag to personalize the cookies with names if they are being used for parties or as favors. Try spreading frosting on the cookies with a knife to make plain frosted cookies.

    Embellished Sugar Cookies

    • Shape sugar cookie dough differently by braiding it or shaping it by hand, or you can even embellish baked sugar cookies with decorations. Try dipping a round sugar cookie in melted chocolate and refrigerating it. Mix some pecans into the sugar cookie dough. Create three, short strands and braid the pecan sugar dough before baking it. After the braided cookie dough is baked, dip one end in white chocolate and roll it in crushed pecans. Try shaping the sugar cookie dough into triangles. Dip one point of the cookie in chocolate and refrigerate. Place white icing in a pastry bag with a plain tip and draw a few diagonal lines across the chocolate tip.
