What to Put on a Resume for Veterinarian Tech Jobs
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for veterinarian tech jobs as of May 2008 was about $34,960 and could extend beyond $41,490. Knowing what to put on a resume when you are applying for veterinarian tech jobs can help you stand out from the competition and land a coveted position.
-
Education
-
Veterinary technicians typically require a certain amount of education -- usually at least an associate degree. On your resume, include your educational background. Include the names and location of all colleges attended and/or courses completed. Include any diploma, certification or degree information and the years you attended and graduated. If applicable, add special coursework, honors or awards.
Professional Background
-
Experienced veterinary technicians should list prior employment information related to veterinary duties. Include the names of animal hospitals you worked for and your titles. If you're a recent graduate applying for a veterinary tech job for the first time, list your most recent previous employers. If you have experience with animals in other scenarios -- such as working in a pet store or volunteering at an animal shelter -- include that.
-
Affiliations
-
Definitely include information regarding veterinary groups, clubs, associations or affiliate programs you belong to. Memberships to prestigious organizations such as American Veterinary Medical Association or American Association of Public Health Veterinarians indicates professionalism. If you belong to other types of animal welfare groups such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, include that information as well.
Cover Letter
-
Write a new cover letter to include with your resume for each job you apply for. Many employers can spot a generic cover letter and may take that as an indication that you're not serious about the position. Research the animal hospital or pet care facility you are applying to before writing your cover letter. A few detailed statements about why you would like to work for a specific veterinary clinic shows interest and dedication.
