Moisturizing is an essential step in any grooming routine. While lotions are the common medicine cabinet staple, they aren't always thick or absorbent enough to ward off serious dryness or heal the skin. Oils and natural creams provide more intensive moisture, and typically yield long-lasting benefits for both men and women. Throw your lotion in your handbag or car for later, and bring in some reinforcements to rescue your thirsty skin.

Coconut Oil

  • Coconut oil is an effective moisturizer for all skin types – it is deeply hydrating yet absorbs quickly. It contains antioxidants that make it anti-inflammatory and soothing for skin affected by eczema and irritation. For best results, shower with warm water and gently towel dry your skin until just damp. Stand on top of a towel to prevent slipping. Pick up a golf ball-sized amount of coconut oil and smooth it over your skin to lock in moisture. The oil will dissolve from solid to liquid when met with the heat of your body.

Shea Butter

  • Shea butter has a cream-like consistency and is ideal for those with sensitive or dry skin. Shea butter sinks into the skin quickly while leaving behind a thin layer that protects skin from the sun and the elements. All-natural shea butter contains vitamins A and E, which soothes and prevents premature aging. It penetrates the skin without clogging pores and can be used on the face as well as the body. Shea butter can also be patted onto chapped lips to soothe and protect.

Olive Oil

  • Olive oil is the ideal moisturizer for dehydrated and aging skin. The kitchen cupboard staple is thick and rich with antioxidants as well as vitamins A and E. Smooth extra-virgin olive oil onto damp skin at night so that it can sink in while you sleep. To aid your pores in absorbing the oil quickly, turn your shower water on and allow it to heat up. Slather your skin with olive oil and step in, avoiding the stream of water – the steam will help the oil to soak in. For fine lines and wrinkles, pat a dime-sized amount of olive oil onto the area and place your face above a bowl of hot water to relax and plump the area. If you use olive oil in the morning, wait 20 minutes before getting dressed to prevent the oil from soaking through your clothing.

Baby Oil

  • Baby oil is a prime healing treatment for all skin types. It’s formulated for a baby's skin, so the ingredients are kept simple with vitamin E being the main component. It works best when applied on wet skin, locking in moisture for the day. Baby oil can also be mixed with cream formulations like shea butter and self-tanners to add a healthy glow to the skin. Try is as a nail treatment, massaging it into cuticles once a day to encourage growth and prevent breakage.
